Britam has launched a new insurance product targeted at medical and non-medical coverage for women.
The product known as Malkia has a minimum annual premium of Sh620 and provides a cash-back benefit after diagnosis of medical conditions such as cervical, ovarian, and breast cancer.
It also covers the treatment of skin-related conditions and artificial intelligence (AI) assisted pregnancy support for women.
Upon diagnosis of cervical, ovarian, or breast cancer, policyholders receive a lump-sum cancer cash benefit, helping to cover medical bills and living expenses.
A second cash payment is made when treatment begins, providing continued financial stability throughout the recovery process.
“Female Wellness Cover (Malkia) stands by women through life’s toughest moments, offering peace of mind when it’s needed most. Whether facing a cancer diagnosis, managing skin conditions, or navigating the journey of motherhood, the cover ensures women have the support they deserve,” said, Evah Kimani acting CEO and principal officer, of Britam Micro-Insurance.
The policy also includes coverage for skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Cancer, which is ranked as the third leading cause of death in Kenya, is a major public health problem that places an immense burden on families, communities, and the health system.
Approximately 27,000 people in Kenya lose their lives to cancer each year and about 82,000 people are currently living with the disease.
The most common cancers are breast, cervical, prostate, oesophageal, and non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which together account for 48 percent of the country’s cancer burden.
Cervical and breast cancer, which affect women, account for 23 percent of all cancer deaths. Unfortunately, 70 to 80 percent of cancer cases are diagnosed at a late stage due to inadequate diagnostic and treatment facilities and the high cost of treatment.
